Duane has extensive experience in Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) leadership positions.  Major initiatives included taking a corporation from basic compliance and no program to world class. 

Recent independent surveys and studies showed the Baxter EHS program ranked #2, following Dupont, by "Competitive Environment, Inc." and ranked #14 of the Fortune 500 companies by the "Center for Environmental Innovation".  Particular expertise and certifications in Health and Safety.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

BAXTER HEALTHCARE, Deerfield, IL.                                       

Vice President, Corporate Environment, Health and Safety Compliance (1996-2003)

Responsible for worldwide Health and Safety and total EHS compliance and auditing for $9 billion company, 55,000 associates, over 400 locations (over 100 manufacturing sites). 

  • Developed and implemented the first worldwide “Best Safety Practices” that resulted in a 61% reduction in accident rates over a 3-year period that saved the corporation millions of dollars in payments to injured employees.  Many other companies are now using these practices.

  • Developed, implemented and conducted training in  “Achieving Safety Excellence” which emphasized accountability and safety culture for senior managers.  As a result, Baxter became a world-class leader in safety.

  • Established an innovative, low cost model/risk based corporate auditing program that assured compliance with both country as well as company requirements and management standards such as environmental ISO 14001 and health and safety OHSAS 18001. 

  • Led numerous Environment, Health and Safety audits covering all businesses throughout the world to assure compliance and promote a world-class culture.

  • Developed a “beyond compliance attitude” at Baxter where compliance with all Health and Safety regulations was a given.  This attitude resulted in Baxter having an unparalleled record of compliance for a corporation of this size.

  • Developed and implemented numerous innovative programs such as “Company Requirements Manual” and the companion “Reference and Training Guide”, Quarterly Occupational Injury and Illness Reporting System, Workers' Compensation Manual, Ergonomics Manual, and an internal “behavior based safety program”.

  • Presented annual EHS progress reports and provided follow up to the Public Policy Committee of the Board of Directors.

Vice President, Corporate Health Services and Safety (1994-1996)

Director, Health Services and Safety (1985-1994)

After the merger with American Hospital Supply Corp. reporting now to the Senior VP of Human Resources, responsibilities were expanded to include safety, industrial hygiene, occupational health, medical, health promotion, and the corporate fitness center. 

  • Developed and implemented the first Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and Drug Testing program for all sites in the United States and Puerto Rico.

  • Developed and implemented the first worldwide health promotion program-“Caring For Health”.

  • Developed and implemented an “early return to work” program for more timely return to work after an occupational injury, which saved the corporation millions of dollars.

  • Established “Center of Excellence” for Health Services and Safety resources after major corporate downsizing.

Director/Associate Director, Corporate Human Resource Administration (1983-1985)

Responsible for the following Corporate wide functions:  Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Fire Protection, Workers' Compensation, Occupational Health and Medical, Health Promotion, Corporate Fitness and the fitness centers, Tuition Reimbursement, Equal Employment Opportunity, Affirmative Action Programs, and Medical and Dental Claims Administration supervising 35 associates and an annual budget of over $26 million.  Additional responsibilities included chairing a worldwide “Health Care Task Force” that explored ways to reduce health care costs for the company as well as for the associates.  Many of the programs and savings continue to this day including a mail order prescription services company called Caremark.

Manager, Corporate Occupational Health Services and Safety (1982-1984)

Responsible for establishing and coordinating an ongoing occupational health, medical, industrial hygiene and safety program for all facilities worldwide.  During this time period the OSHA incidence rate was reduced by 56.5% and workers' compensation costs were lowered by 71%.

Manager/Senior Industrial Hygienist, Corporate Industrial Hygiene (1977-1982)

Responsible for starting and managing the industrial hygiene program at Baxter, which included all monitoring corporate wide to determine employee exposure to all potential chemical and physical hazards in the workplace.

GENERAL DYNAMICS CORP./ELECTRIC BOAT DIVISION

Groton, CT.

Senior Industrial Hygienist/Industrial Hygienist (1975-1977)

Conducted industrial hygiene surveys which included extensive work in asbestos, noise, lead, foundry, confined spaces, and welding for building and overhauling nuclear submarines.  This site employed 25,000 associates.  In addition, responsibilities included overseeing asbestos removal from nuclear submarines, working with outside vendors to develop asbestos substitutes, health and safety training, auditing, achieving compliance with OSHA regulations, developing new programs, and implementing new systems. Testified in court as an expert witness in asbestos cases, Worker's Compensation cases and in the area of contested OSHA citations.   

UNIROYAL TIRE COMPANY, Detroit, MI.                   

Research and Development Specialist (1971-1974)

Various positions and responsibilities including the development of experimental radial tires as well as Quality Control.
